Fourwing Saltbush Seed

I. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND STANDARDS

1.             BASIC RULES

The UCIA General Seed Certification Requirements and Standards are basic and with the following constitute the requirements and standards for fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) seed certification.

II.         SEED PRODUCTION

A.         APPLICATIONS

Dates and fees for applications are as listed in the General Requirements and Standards.

B.        SEED ELIGIBILITY

1.         Foundation class male and female rooted cuttings for the variety Rincon are available through the UCIA for the production of Certified seed.

2.         Fourwing saltbush varieties currently certified in Utah are listed in Prefix A.

C.        LAND REQUIREMENTS

1.         A crop or native wild plants of the same kind must not have been present on the land two years prior to stand establishment for the production of Certified seed.

2.         Isolation:

a.         Minimum distance from a different variety, wild hybridizing population, or non-certified population of the same kind shall be 300 ft. for fields of less than 5 acres or l00 ft. for fields of more than 5 acres.

b.         Fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) will hybridize with many of the perennial Atriplex species such as A. garrettii, A. gardneri, A. confertiofolia, A. Cuneta, A.tridentata, A. falcata, and A. obovata.


D.        FIELD INSPECTION

                        1.         A seedling inspection will be made by a UCIA representative during the first season after transplanting to check land requirements and seedling growth.

                        2.         An inspection during blossoming and/or after seed has set but before harvest will be made each year certification is desired.

E.        FIELD STANDARDS

1.         The field may be subject to Certification rejection if volunteer plants of the same species are allowed to mature to seed.

III.      CONDITIONING, SAMPLING, AND LABELING

A.         Bags or containers of the in-the-dirt-seed must be tagged or stamped with a lot number at the time of harvest and the total number and size of such containers reported to the UCIA so that identification is maintained from non-certified lots.

C.        A representative sample for seed testing of at least 1 1/2 lb. will be drawn by a UCIA representative after the seed has been conditioned at an approved cleaning plant.

D.        Each bag of seed sold as certified must be packed in new bags and be tagged and sealed by a UCIA representative.
